A Success Story in Digitizing the SAT Prep Exams: GamaLearn & Capital Educators

SAT Prep Exams play a pivotal role in students’ academic journey as they prepare for college. In the ever-evolving landscape of education, adaptability and innovation are the key. But what happens when the tried-and-true pen-and-paper SAT exams need to make way for a digital future?

About Capital Educators

Capital Educators provide college entrance exam preparation since 1997, develop programs that help students to get ready for the SAT and ACT, as well as run college application workshops that guide students through the college process. With a mission to prepare students for college through comprehensive exam preparation and college application workshops, they’ve been a guiding light for countless aspiring scholars. Handling a significant number of students and tests annually, Capital Educators needed a solution that could scale and adapt to the demands of the modern era.

Brief history of SAT exams and their importance in education.

Let’s take a moment to explore the history and enduring importance of SAT exams.

The roots of the SAT can be traced back to the early 20th century. Initially known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, it was introduced in 1926 by a group of prestigious colleges and universities, collectively known as the College Entrance Examination Board (now the College Board). The primary goal was to create a fair and standardized assessment that could objectively measure a student’s readiness for college.

Evolution of the SAT

Over the years, the SAT has evolved in response to changing educational needs and societal demands. It underwent several transformations, including changes in format and scoring methods. One significant shift occurred in 1994 when the test’s name was officially changed to SAT, with the acronym no longer representing “aptitude.” This change reflected a broader emphasis on assessing acquired knowledge and skills.

The need for modernization and digitization of SAT exams arises from the evolving educational landscape and the demand for greater accessibility, flexibility, and equity in standardized testing. Embracing technology not only aligns with the digital transformation of education but also addresses challenges such as remote learning, accessibility for students in underserved areas, and effective accommodation for students with disabilities. While modernization enhances the SAT’s relevance and adaptability in the digital age, it remains essential to uphold the test’s integrity and its role in evaluating students’ academic readiness for college.

The challenges faced by Capital Educators in Digitizing SAP Prep Exams

The Challenge: A Digital Transition

The challenge was clear: transition the time-honored, pen-and-paper SAT exams into the digital world while upholding the stringent safety and reliability standards that have been synonymous with SAT testing.

In addition to that, it should be aligned or as closely mimicing the real digital SAT exam that students will sit for using College Board’s official platform. This included a set of functionality, behaviors and features that Prep Test should have to simulate as closely as possible the experience the students will be exposed to.

The stakes were high, but both GamaLearn and Capital Educators were up for the challenge.

GamaLearn’s Innovative Approach

GamaLearn’s SwiftAssess platform became the cornerstone of this digital transformation. What set this solution apart was its ability to cater to the unique requirements of standardized tests like the SAT. The platform was not just a digital replica of traditional exams, it was a carefully crafted solution that embraced the future of testing while preserving the integrity of the SAT.

GamaLearn’s solution

SwiftAssess platform is designed to orchestrate and manage the entire process of Authoring, Delivering and Tracking assessments of all types, it is bringing unique solutions to each segment with respect to real-world scenarios (connectivity, devices, security, standardization, automation, business intelligence, and more). From a single campus model, to a nationwide assessment deployment – SwiftAssess offers the right set of instruments to cover the necessary workloads.

To meet the needs of Capital Educators we delivered the Multi-stage testing which is the feature that underlines the new digitized SAT exam as outlined by College Board.

Here are a few examples of the new features and capabilities that supported this in SwiftAssess:

Provided students with an environment mirroring the actual exam experience, in alignment with College Board’s standards. This includes Desmos Calculator, Highlighting, Cross-out options in multiple-choice questions, as well as Passages and Scenario Questions.

Introduced the ability to provide intermissions and separators between sections/modules as per the blueprint for SAT to split between Math and English parts of the test as well as the ability to extract reports in different formats, including psychometrically formatted matrices that are required for SMEs and Psychometricians to determine the level of the candidate, their progression, their weaknesses, etc.

SwiftAssess also maintained the stringent standards expected of standardized exams by implementing the security measures such as watermarking, secure browsers, test behavior and navigation (timer, backtrack, etc..), test delivery schemes (linear, loft, blueprint, MST, adaptive). The platform supported proctoring, monitoring, and session management during and after the exam was administered as well as corner cases, student device failures, interruptions to the network.

GamaLearn’s team followed an agile methodology to break the project into milestones, deliverables and phases – each of which was developed/customized/tested/shipped and approved to form a whole component in SwiftAssess today called “MST – Multi-staged Testing”.

Like all software projects, a well-defined process for User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and piloting launches is crucial to ensure that issues and required adaptations are addressed accurately. This approach also allows for the early enhancement of the user experience before actual students engage with the final version of the feature and participate in real administered tests.

The success in overcoming any challenges can be attributed to the strong communication between the GamaLearn and Capital Educators teams, particularly the support team, during the initial exam trials. This included working weekends and overnight shifts to promptly capture feedback and efficiently relay it to the relevant stakeholders for necessary corrective actions. Moreover, keeping the end-users consistently informed and updated about any changes played a significant role in the process.

The most compelling way to illustrate the achieved results is by showcasing the feedback from the Founder of Capital Educators:
